Establishing a precise geographic location and date for each jaguar observation can be challenging. Although most recent records may have modern global positioning system (GPS) locations, prior to 1990 such locational accuracy is rare. For older observations, locations are assigned based on the location name (e.g., Santa Rita Mountains, Pima County). In some cases, these observations may use names that are no longer recognized. In addition, some newer locations and dates may be obscured for reasons of sensitivity, such as concern for the safety of the animal, the researchers, or the research equipment. A full list of location types can be found in the table below. Lower numbers in the Precision column represent more exact or accurate locations.
